WARNING: There are minor spoilers ahead for the series premiere of Mayans M.C.!
Because FX’s upcoming drama, Mayans M.C. is a spinoff from Sons of Anarchy, the door was always open for characters from the original show to appear on the new series. But apparently, fans won’t have to wait for the first crossover between the two shows. According to Entertainment Weekly, series creator Kurt Sutter told reporters at the TCA Press Tour that Katey Sagal will reprise her role as Gemma Teller Morrow for a flashback sequence set eight years before the primary events of the new series.
“It’s a flashback to eight years ago and a way of letting us know that he’s in Stockton where the two worlds will collide, at least in memory,” said Sutter, who added that other characters from SOA could also make appearances in flashbacks without overshadowing the new characters on their own show. “I don’t want to mess with that [SOA] mythology,” related Sutter. “That mythology can live in imagination. But flashbacks wouldn’t be stepping on what is happening now.”
Although Gemma was killed off before the end of SOA, she may be the most likely character to return in the flashbacks. Sagal is married to Sutter, and she frequently appears in his projects.
Mayans M.C. is set over two years after the Sons of Anarchy series finale, and it stars J. D. Pardo as Ezekiel “EZ” Reyes, a young man whose promising future was snuffed out by cartel violence. EZ joins the Mayans as a prospect to get his revenge, but it’s a lifetime commitment with no way out. Edward James Olmos and Jacqueline Obradors co-star in the series as EZ’s parents, Felipe and Marisol Reyes. The extended cast includes Antonio Jaramillo, Richard Cabral, Clayton Cardenas, Sarah Bolger, Emilio Rivera, Joseph Raymond, Lucero Frankie, Loyal Delgado, Carla Baratta, John Ortiz, Maurice Compte, Efrat Dor, and Alexandra Barreto.
The first episode of Mayans M.C. will premiere on September 4.
