Recently, it was confirmed that Jessica Lange will be returning to the show for the first time since the show’s fourth season. Sarah Paulson announced the news that Lange will be reprising her role as Constance Langdon during the TCA Summer Press Tour. Series co-creator Ryan Murphy (Glee, Feud) has already confirmed that the new season will be a crossover between Season 1 (Murder House) and Season 3 (Coven). The two different seasons had dramatically different endings when they concluded, with Murder House ending with the impending arrival of the Antichrist and Coven ending with the witch school happily opening itself up to the public. It remains to be seen how the two will intertwine, or what the narrative will be. It was previously announced most of the returning cast members would come back for the eighth season, including Sarah Paulson, Kathy Bates, Evan Peters, Adina Porter, Cheyenne Jackson, Billy Eichner, Leslie Grossman and Billie Lourd, as well as franchise newcomers Joan Collins and Cody Fern. It remains to be seen how actors like Paulson or Peters will factor into the crossover, having played two different characters in both seasons. The Emmy, Golden Globe and AFI Award-winning series from co-creators Murphy and Brad Falchuk aired its seventh season on FX last year. The sixth installment, American Horror Story: Roanoke, recently received four Emmy Award nominations in the hairstyling, makeup and sound editing categories. The American Horror Story franchise has received 28 Emmy nominations and four wins over its previous six seasons. It is produced by Twentieth Century Fox Television. American Horror Story was renewed for two more seasons back in January of 2017. American Horror Story: Apocalypse will premiere on September 12 on FX.
James Foley, the director of the latter two installments of the Fifty Shades trilogy, has just signed on to direct the prison escape movie Alcatraz, according to Collider. The film, which is being produced by Basil Iwanyk and Gianni Nunnari for Thunder Road and Hollywood Gang productions, will follow a bank robber sent to the titular prison who attempts to escape from the inescapable island. The film is based on the true story of Frank Morris, a bank robber who helped lead three other prisoners escape from The Rock in June 1962 and are still on the U.S. Marshall Service’s “Most Wanted” list over 50 years after their disappearance. Morris’ escape has been seen in film before in 1979’s Escape From Alcatraz, based on the book of the same name written by J. Campbell Bruce and starring Clint Eastwood as Morris, as well as Jack Thibeau (Lethal Weapon) as Clarence Anglin and Fred Ward (2 Guns) as John Anglin. While the true results of the escape are still unknown, the film, which received critical acclaim and box office success, hinted that the prisoners were successful in making it to the mainland. Foley has had a very prominent career behind the camera in Hollywood, directing the highly-acclaimed film adaptation of Glengarry Glen Ross, the cult crime drama Confidence, the second and final installments of the Fifty Shades series, Darker and Freed, as well as episodes of Twin Peaks, Hannibal, House of Cards and Billions. Alcatraz is being written by Ian Mackenzie Jeffers, who wrote James Wan’s first venture into the action genre, 2007’s Death Sentence, as well as the 2011 Liam Neeson-led survival thriller The Grey, which he co-wrote with director Joe Carnahan based on his short story “Ghost Walker.”
Ava DuVernay’s Central Park Five series continues to bolster its already stellar ensemble as Variety reports that Niecy Nash (Claws, Scream Queens), Aunjanue Ellis (Quantico, Designated Survivor), Kylie Bunbury (Pitch, Game Night), Marsha Stephanie Blake (Getting On, Orange is the New Black) and Storm Reid (A Wrinkle in Time) are set to join the Netflix series. Based on a true story that gripped the country, Central Park Five will chronicle the notorious case of five teenagers of color who were convicted of a rape they did not commit. The episodes will focus on the five teenagers from Harlem — Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson, Yusef Salaam, Raymond Santana and Korey Wise. The series will span from the spring of 1989, when each were first questioned about the incident, to 2014 when they were exonerated and a settlement was reached with the city of New York. Michael K. Williams (The Wire, The Night Of) is set to play Bobby McCray, devoted father of accused teen Antron McCray; with Vera Farmiga (Up In the Air, Bates Motel) playing Elizabeth Lederer, the Manhattan Assistant District Attorney and lead prosecutor on the case; and John Leguizamo (Bloodline, John Wick) playing Raymond Santana Sr., the father of accused teen Raymond Santana Jr. DuVernay will write and direct the four-episode narrative series, which is set to arrive on Netflix in 2019. Jeff Skoll and Jonathan King from Participant Media, Oprah Winfrey/Harpo Films, Jane Rosenthal and Berry Welsh from Tribeca Productions and Ava DuVernay will executive produce the limited series.
According to Deadline, Sir Patrick Stewart has personally announced at the Las Vegas Star Trek Convention that he will officially be stepping back into the role of Jean-Luc Picard in a new Star Trek show for CBS All Access! Star Trek: Discovery co-creator and executive producer Alex Kurtzman will oversee development on the new show, which is not a Star Trek: The Next Generation reboot but rather a continuation of Picard’s story. “I will always be very proud to have been a part of ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation,’ but when we wrapped that final movie in the spring of 2002, I truly felt my time with Star Trek had run its natural course,” Stewart said. “It is, therefore, an unexpected but delightful surprise to find myself excited and invigorated to be returning to Jean-Luc Picard and to explore new dimensions within him. Seeking out new life for him, when I thought that life was over. During these past years, it has been humbling to hear many stories about how ‘The Next Generation’ brought people comfort, saw them through difficult periods in their lives or how the example of Jean-Luc inspired so many to follow in his footsteps, pursuing science, exploration and leadership. I feel I’m ready to return to him for the same reason – to research and experience what comforting and reforming light he might shine on these often very dark times. I look forward to working with our brilliant creative team as we endeavor to bring a fresh, unexpected and pertinent story to life once more.” “With overwhelming joy, it’s a privilege to welcome Sir Patrick Stewart back to the Star Trek fold,” Kurtzman said. “For over 20 years, fans have hoped for the return of Captain Jean-Luc Picard and that day is finally here. We can’t wait to forge new ground, surprise people, and honor generations both new and old.” Kurtzman will executive produce the new series alongside newly-appointed Star Trek: Discovery executive producer James Duff, former Discovery executive producer Akiva Goldsman (The Dark Tower), Michael Chabon (Spider-Man 2) and Star Trek: Voyager and Discovery writer Kirsten Beyer. Also executive producing are Heather Kadin of Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment President Eugene “Rod” Roddenberry, son of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry, and Roddenberry Entertainment COO Trevor Roth. Beginning in 1987, Patrick Stewart led the Star Trek: New Generation series for seven seasons before transitioning to movies movies with Star Trek Generations (1994), Star Trek: First Contact (1996), Star Trek: Insurrection (1998) and Star Trek: Nemesis (2002) as well as Star Trek: Deep Space Nine‘s pilot “Emissary.” He also portrays Dr. Charles Xavier (a.k.a. Professor X) in the X-Men franchise. In June CBS Television Productions announced a new overall deal with executive producer Alex Kurtzman, extending his agreement with the studio to five years. As part of the new production deal, Kurtzman will supervise the expansion of CBS’ Star Trek franchise for television, developing new series, mini-series and other content opportunities, including animation.
Before the Season 8 premiere of American Horror Story: Apocalypse, FX Networks has already greenlit Ryan Murphy’s American Horror Story Season 10! “Ryan asked for a 10th season of American Horror Story which we were happy to give to him,” FX CEO John Landgraf said in an interview via Deadline. “He has been really prolific; he has been an important part of the FX brand, and he will continue to be a very important part of the FX brand.” When asked about the future of the show, Landgraf said that Murphy will be the one to decide if Season 10 will be the last installment of the American Horror Story series. “A lot of that comes down to Ryan and whether he still feels inspired about it. I think the eighth cycle, which is currently in production, is awesome and crazy, and I think the fans will really like it. Part of what’s cool about American Horror Story is its anthology nature. So it comes down to whether Ryan and his collaborators, like (showrunner) Tim Minear, could come up with stories that they are excited about.” Series co-creator Murphy (Glee, Feud) has already confirmed that the new season will be a crossover between Season 1 (Murder House) and Season 3 (Coven). The two different seasons had dramatically different endings when they concluded, with Murder House ending with the impending arrival of the Antichrist and Coven ending with the witch school happily opening itself up to the public. WARNING: There are minor spoilers ahead for the series premiere of Mayans M.C.! Because FX’s upcoming drama, Mayans M.C. is a spinoff from Sons of Anarchy, the door was always open for characters from the original show to appear on the new series. But apparently, fans won’t have to wait for the first crossover between the two shows. According to Entertainment Weekly, series creator Kurt Sutter told reporters at the TCA Press Tour that Katey Sagal will reprise her role as Gemma Teller Morrow for a flashback sequence set eight years before the primary events of the new series. “It’s a flashback to eight years ago and a way of letting us know that he’s in Stockton where the two worlds will collide, at least in memory,” said Sutter, who added that other characters from SOA could also make appearances in flashbacks without overshadowing the new characters on their own show. “I don’t want to mess with that [SOA] mythology,” related Sutter. “That mythology can live in imagination. But flashbacks wouldn’t be stepping on what is happening now.” Although Gemma was killed off before the end of SOA, she may be the most likely character to return in the flashbacks. Sagal is married to Sutter, and she frequently appears in his projects. Mayans M.C. is set over two years after the Sons of Anarchy series finale, and it stars J. D. Pardo as Ezekiel “EZ” Reyes, a young man whose promising future was snuffed out by cartel violence. EZ joins the Mayans as a prospect to get his revenge, but it’s a lifetime commitment with no way out. Edward James Olmos and Jacqueline Obradors co-star in the series as EZ’s parents, Felipe and Marisol Reyes. The extended cast includes Antonio Jaramillo, Richard Cabral, Clayton Cardenas, Sarah Bolger, Emilio Rivera, Joseph Raymond, Lucero Frankie, Loyal Delgado, Carla Baratta, John Ortiz, Maurice Compte, Efrat Dor, and Alexandra Barreto. The first episode of Mayans M.C. will premiere on September 4.
